Een jurk voor de juffrouw.

Het beeld van Vietnam dat me steeds zal
bijblijven is dat van een jong meisje of jonge vrouw gekleed in een Áo dài.
Zij het nu of ze uiterst elegant flaneert door de straten van Hanoi dan wel kaarsrecht op de fiets zich door het drukke verkeer een weg zoekt, ze zijn dan ook niet uit het straatbeeld weg te denken, de schoolmeisjes in hun witte Áo dài.

Wie met Vietnam Airlines naar Vietnam vliegt wordt al aan boord geconfronteerd met elegante airhostessen die de Áo dài als uniform dragen. De Áo dài bestaat uit bovenaan een nauwsluitende zijden tuniek die, vanaf het middel in lange split langs beide zijden tot onder de knie valt. Het kleding stuk accentueert heel sterk de slanke schouders van de vietnamese meisjes en vrouwen. Onder die tuniek wordt een lange nauwsluitende broek gedragen die in wijde pijpen uitloopt. De op zich al knappe vrouwen zorgen bovendien voor een bijkomend licht erotisch tintje door het dragen van strak ondergoed zodat hun figuur in een Áo dài nog extra benadrukt wordt.
Hoewel hij al vaak als symbool voor Vietnam gebruikt wordt en vrouwen in kleurige Áo dài vaak opgevoerd worden in toeristische brochures of op prentbriefkaarten heeft hij slechts een jonge geschiedenis.
De Áo dài verscheen voor het eerst in het straatbeeld in de jaren 1930. Toch vindt het kledingstuk zijn oorsprong in de traditonele klederdracht waarbij kleur en design werden bepaald door ceremoniële regels, de sociale klasse waartoe men behoorde en de openbare functies die men beklede. Zo was de gele kleur voorbehouden voor de keizer, terwijl wit gedragen werd bij rouwplechtigheden en blauw voorbehouden was voor ambtenaren bij officiële plechtigheden.
In zijn vroegere traditionele vorm was het bovendien een kledingstuk voor mannen en vrouwen, daar waar de huidige Áo dài uitsluitend door vrouwen gedragen wordt. Vandaag echter moet de Áo dài meer en meer plaats ruimen voor de westerse mode. Toch blijft hij nog belangrijk als schooluniform voor meisjes, zij het dat het dan steeds een witte Áo dài is. Elian Lille, een bekende franse designer in Ho Chi Minh City noemt de Áo dài
een ‘onberispelijk en sensueel uniform’ dat op vreemde bezoekers een blijvende indruk nalaat.
